A Guide on How to Pray for your Spouse

Prayer is essential.  It’s the lifeline of how our hearts connect to the rhythm in which Jesus is calling us to move towards.  If you will, it’s a song that He plays that only your heart can hear concerning the issues, questions, or concerns that you bring before His feet.  Prayer is a place of safety, transformation, replenishment, and an opportunity to reroute if off course.  It’s a place of connection and clarity.

Personally, my husband and I have some upcoming life events that are outside the realm of our influence and prayer is our vehicle to victory.  (Wife tip: Not everything should be shared; some things need to stay hidden until maturity or fulfilled). Yes, I will be sharing in the future what I can’t disclose at the moment but only after God performs.

Now, that I’ve said all that back to prayer.  I figured it would be helpful if I shared how I structure prayers based off biblical scripture.  Firstly, there is no wrong or right way to pray only what feels right to the person issuing the prayer in the first place. Never criticize someone’s prayer, definitely your spouse.  The scripture serves as a reminder that 1. I need not stress if I pray and 2. I find comfort that God is familiar with my situation.  The method of praying God’s Word can be applied to any request based of scriptures that describe what you are praying about. For example, healing, marriage, heartbreak, finances and the list goes on.

Below is an example of how I use scripture to pray for my husband.

Dear Lord –

I come before your throne of grace offering thanks for how you have blessed our hands and hearts.

I thank you that P’s heart is open to have you lead and that he’ll have courage to stand against anything contrary to what you’ve spoken.  For your word says “a man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps” (Prov 16:9).  I believe that his steps will be God-inspired, impactful, and fruitful.

I cast down any attacks planned by the enemy that may come against the calling and plan you have on his life.  For Isiah 54:17 says, “For no weapon formed against him (me) shall prosper”, and that “For I know the plans I have for you…plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”. Jeremiah 29:11

I pray that I be a crown on my husband’s head and not decay to his bones. “Proverbs 12:4.  Allow me speak life, encouragement, and faith over my husband at all times.

Surround him with your angels and cover him with your blood, in Jesus name. Amen.

Did you find that helpful?  I certainly hope so.  Please leave comments about best prayer practices that you have learned along the way.

Until next time,

XO Jo
